Random thought. I believe people who truly love to run and have the passion for running will run daily no matter what, well into their later years. The same type of people will schedule races to often enter as a source of motivation or to achieve some type of goal. Then the same runner will more likely train harder or faster. Otherwise that’s the only difference. They’ll still run without some race or goal but more often they won’t run as hard. I can’t generalize for everyone but how often do you see someone do a complete flat out competitive track workout under the gun without having a goal or race? I think that’s the beauty of goals. They make you run like a bat out of hell.
